Description

Leatherwood Viola Rosin is handmade in Australia from a blend of Resins and crafted to exact tolerances resulting in a superb, premium grade rosin. Different recipes are used for different, distinct sound and response characteristics with the rosin finally being poured into a handmade wooden mount and wrapped in locally sourced, artisan cured, deer leather.

Leatherwood Viola Rosin options:

CRISP: A decisive attack, firm traction and crisp sautille; this recipe creates an undeniably forthright sound through a glassier texture.

The Crisp blend often works well with an instrument with lots of resonance but is a little ‘woolly’ in sound, offering it greater clarity and articulation. Crisp also assists bows or techniques that struggle to achieve a clear and articulate spiccato or sautille. Crisp can also assist small student or cheap instruments, by enhancing their sound to be brighter and sometimes louder; and beginning students find it easier to articulate with crisp.

SUPPLE: A warm and softer sound, consistent traction that feels velvety and rich; this recipe maintains a reliably sharp attack on the string.

The Supple blend can help generate a more powerful and focused sound from a softer and lighter bow with less ‘bite’. Supple can also enhance the sounds of a deep / warm sounding instrument by making it sound more resonant. Supple can also ‘soften’ an instrument which is too loud, bright or one-dimensional in sound.

BAROQUE: Specially formulated for gut strings

The gentle but clean attack and smoother traction allows the string to resonate freely with maximum clarity. Baroque rosin makes a bright, clear sound with a feeling that the bow is quicker on the string and makes it easier to play fast with more clarity. The smoother traction allows the string to be played with more intensity without distortion and also reduce the ‘squeak’ often encountered with using modern rosins on gut. Suitable for Baroque Viola, tenor viol and viola d’amore.

These three options are also available for Violin and Cello.
